What is driving shopper to shop a certain modality?

  • 45% of shoppers claim to shop in-store because they do not trust someone else picking out their grocery products for them
  • 43% of shoppers claim to shop online using delivery because it’s easy to use the stores website/app for shopping, while 33% claim to shop online for pickup for the same reason.

Households with a yearly income of $100k – $200k find convenience to be significantly more important when it comes to shopping online for pick-up vs. households with a yearly income of $50k or less. 

Conversely, sales/promotions and location are significantly more important to households with a yearly income of $50k or less vs. households with a yearly income of $100k – 200k.

Potato Market Update

Raw sliced yellow potatoesRusset potato demand is relatively low compared to what we’ve experienced in the last six months. There is generally a four-week stretch during the winter when demand is low. Pricing remains very steady, and shippers remain content with the slowdown.

Growers in Florida are expected to start shipping new crop red potatoes in mid-February. Contact your RPE sales representative for pricing!

Yellow potato demand, like the russet potato market, has slowed, but inventories continue to shrink. Growers in Wisconsin are nearly out of supplies. Supplies remain adequate in North Dakota, Minnesota, Colorado, Idaho, and Canada. Quality remains, with pricing inching upward as we get further from harvest.

Not many changes in the white potato market. Pricing remains the same, with most of the demand remaining in the Northeast and Southeast. The majority of the current supplies are being sourced from the Northeast.

Fingerling potato demand continues to be strong. Supplies are limited to Colorado, Washington, and Idaho. Low inventories nationwide continue to keep market pricing abnormally high.

Onion Market Update

Overall, onion demand remains steady for January. Pricing has also held steady over the past few weeks with little to no changes. Large, jumbo and colossal onions are in high demand. Overall quality is excellent in the Pacific Northwest. There are no transportation issues, but pricing remains high.

New crop onions out of Texas are expected to start mid to late March.
