Potato Market Update

Potato Market Update

Russet potato demand is holding steady. Every major shipping area is harvesting this year’s crop.   All growing regions are reporting average to slightly above average yields except the Northeast, where excess rain continues to hamper the growing season. This season is gearing up for a bumper crop of potatoes and pricing is reflecting the downward pressure.

Growers in Colorado are starting to bring new crop red potatoes to market. Growers in the Midwest and Idaho have new crop red potatoes available.

All major yellow potato areas are up and running, experiencing some above-average yields with excellent quality. And just like the russet potato market, the added availability contributes to pricing pressure. We anticipate the market will improve slightly once the crop is harvested and undercover.

White potatoes are seeing steady demand and pricing. All major shipping areas have the needed supplies to cover demand, with most of the demand continuing to be in the Southeast and the Northeast.

Colorado, Idaho, Washington, Pennsylvania, and Maine growers have fingerling potatoes available. Pricing has come under pressure with the additional volume available.

Onion Market Update

Onion Market Update

With the California season wrapping up, Oregon and Washington growers are ramping up with new crop onions. Idaho is just getting started with their new season. Overall demand is very steady, with high demand for reds and whites. Quality overall on new crop onions has been excellent, with growers reporting great weather for harvest. The overall size profile continues to be larger, with mediums currently being more limited in the market.
