How to prepare for Thanksgiving push.

Potato market

The russet potato market is seeing good demand throughout the country. It appears that Idaho’s lower shipments are affecting the rest of the country’s increased demand. The open market price continues to inch up on nearly all russet potato sizes. Movement will increase tremendously in the coming weeks to accommodate holiday demands.

Demand will exceed supply in the red potato market. Growers in various regions will not have the same inventory as years prior. The red potato market will continue to have strength, especially through the holiday. Florida will bring more new crop red potatoes to market when it becomes available in a few months.

Movement in the yellow potato market is stable. Most growing regions have an adequate supply with steady pricing. Contact your RPE sales representative for special promotional pricing.

Demand and pricing remain steady in the white potato market.

All growing areas are happy with their remaining fingerling potato supply. Pricing remains steady making this an excellent variety to promote.

Merchandising update

The big Thanksgiving push is just ahead so be sure to plan your inventories accordingly. Shopping generally starts by November 22 and then increases daily until November 27.

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is one of the busiest shopping days of the year so don’t be caught short on inventory.

Make sure to have plenty of product on hand by November 25, to support your last-minute shoppers.

Onion market

With the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, demand and pricing have increased on all sizes of yellow and white onions. Red onion demand remains fair, accompanied by low pricing.

Onion supply will be tighter around the holiday. Current onion supply regions include Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Colorado, Wisconsin, Michigan and New York. Growers are reporting excellent quality so far this season.
